The value of building a supportive community has been an essential feature of the Montessori child development and education philosophy since its inception. Dr. Maria Montessori, founder of the Montessori philosophy more than 100 years ago, called her early childhood classrooms ‘Children’s Houses.’ She believed the classroom is a place where children develop a sense of belonging and responsibility for themselves and others. The classroom represents a welcoming, secure environment where children are free to explore and concentrate on activities of their choice while learning to become respectful, purposeful members of their community.
Apple Montessori Schools have been an important part of the educational community in New Jersey since 1972. Yet, the origins of Apple Montessori Schools began thousands of miles away. In this blog post, we invite you to learn a little more about our story and who we are!
For nearly 50 years, families have discovered and appreciated the Apple Montessori difference first-hand in helping guide their children into becoming kind, successful, and happy individuals who develop a lifelong love of learning. Apple’s modern Montessori approach and curriculum develops well-rounded, confident, and capable children who become purposeful members of our families, communities, and the world.
An essential feature of Apple Montessori Schools’ modern Montessori philosophy and approach is the “three-year cycle”. Based on the research and practical application with children over a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori found that children’s development occurs in successive stages for physical, cognitive, social, and emotional maturity. In each “phase of development,” a child builds the foundation to move on to the next stage of growth.
“Summer camp, rooted in the Montessori model, reinforces and builds upon the growth achieved during the academic year. The quality of instruction and care provided in Apple’s summer camp is top-notch. As a parent, I find it invaluable to know that my child is not only in great hands during the summer months but is also learning and having fun!” — Laurie D., an Apple Parent
“The development of language is part of the development of the personality, for words are the natural means of expressing thoughts and establishing understanding between people.” – Dr. Maria Montessori
There’s nothing more enjoyable and gratifying to watch than a young child absorbed in movement—reaching out with their hands and feet, rolling, crawling, walking, running, and dancing. After birth, a child’s actions indicate their natural need for independence by exploring, learning, and engaging in their environment, connecting both mind and body.
A young child’s brain is incredible and has an immeasurable capacity for development and learning. Most of a child’s brain development happens in the first six years of their life. During these years, your child has what Dr. Maria Montessori referred to as an “absorbent” mind. Like a sponge, a child absorbs vast amounts of information quickly. Amazing, right?
At Apple Montessori Schools, part of our mission is to nurture and develop the whole child as thoughtful, compassionate, and giving citizens. We believe in helping each child see that he or she has a gift to offer in making the world a better place. As we lead and teach by example, we are passionate about modeling the value of charitable actions and giving back to the communities we serve, so that our students learn valuable lessons about the art of giving and participating in charitable activities all year round.
When we talk about education, we often focus on the core subject matter. We wonder about the best ways to teach math, reading, writing, and science. But sometimes, we forget the most important subject of all: the ones the students are truly passionate about.
