Dr. Maria Montessori, founder of the Montessori philosophy more than 100 years ago, called her early childhood classrooms ‘Children’s Houses.’ She believed the classroom is a place where children develop a sense of belonging and responsibility for themselves and others. The classroom represents a welcoming, secure environment where children are free to explore and concentrate on activities of their choice while learning to become respectful, purposeful members of their community.

Apple Montessori Schools have been an important part of the educational community in New Jersey since 1972. Yet, the origins of Apple Montessori Schools began thousands of miles away. In this blog post, we invite you to learn a little more about our story and who we are!

An essential feature of Apple Montessori Schools’ modern Montessori philosophy and approach is the “three-year cycle”. Based on the research and practical application with children over a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori found that children’s development occurs in successive stages for physical, cognitive, social, and emotional maturity. In each “phase of development,” a child builds the foundation to move on to the next stage of growth.

There’s nothing more enjoyable and gratifying to watch than a young child absorbed in movement—reaching out with their hands and feet, rolling, crawling, walking, running, and dancing. After birth, a child’s actions indicate their natural need for independence by exploring, learning, and engaging in their environment, connecting both mind and body.

A young child’s brain is incredible and has an immeasurable capacity for development and learning. Most of a child’s brain development happens in the first six years of their life. During these years, your child has what Dr. Maria Montessori referred to as an “absorbent” mind. Like a sponge, a child absorbs vast amounts of information quickly. Amazing, right?

At Apple Montessori Schools, part of our mission is to nurture and develop the whole child as thoughtful, compassionate, and giving citizens.
