Getting Your Child Ready for Summer Camp

With little people, change can be big. Children who are attending summer camp for the first time may feel a little nervous, and even those transitioning from our school to summer schedule may need some time to adjust. Apple Montessori Schools’ summer program has been perfected over 45 years to engage campers ages 2-12 with the right mix of jam-packed summer fun and engaging STEAM learning. Campers enjoy age-appropriate activities and adventures like daily swim lessons, FasTracKids, Junior Scientists, Tech Time, Creative Kids, Young Chefs, field trips, in-house events, theme weeks and much more.

Your child will continue to develop his or her cognitive and social skills while having fun and meeting new friends. There’s so much to look forward to in creating a wonderful summer with memories and friendships that can last a lifetime.

Here are some simple tips we’ve found effective in helping your child enjoy the new summer camp experience, especially if it’s their first time as “campers”:

  1. Talk about what to expect at summer camp. Help your child visualize and understand the activities that they will be participating in with children of their own age. Unlike the regular school year’s multi-age classroom, your child will engage with peers while enjoying fun activities all day long, from swimming and sports to arts and crafts. There are also in-house events like “Reptile Man” who brings in all kinds of critters and “Carnival Day” where children enjoy face-painting. You may even want to share your own camp memories or review our summer camp overview online with your child: https://applemontessorischools.com/summer-camp-at-apple/
  2. Take your child shopping for the materials and supplies they will need. Preparing for summer camp can be more fun when your child is part of the process and decision-making. Let your child help select their summer wardrobe: bathing suit, goggles, sneakers, socks, hats, top and bottoms. Tip: you may also want to label your child’s belongings with his or her name so as not to lose them.
  3. Become familiar first-hand with our summer camp program. We offer Camper Meet & Greets, open houses, and orientations in which we encourage all new families to attend. It’s a wonderful opportunity to familiarize yourself and your child with our welcoming environment and proven child developmental and educational activities that eliminate the “summer gap” between school years. Your child will enjoy the continuous learning path and have a good time along the way.

Also, you can speak with previous or current campers through our Parent Ambassador Program to ask questions and learn from their experiences. It’s not only important for children who are new to Apple Montessori but it’s also important for current students. The transition to a new summer schedule can be troublesome, plus there are new students (campers) to meet. Note: our infant and toddler program doesn’t really change for summer camp, however, it may include some special in-house events like “mad science” or “jam cats.”

With our team of year-round teachers, we have enjoyed providing summer camp for more than 45 years. Children who have been with us during the school year love getting to spend the summer with their friends and teachers, and children who return each summer enjoy reuniting with old friends and making new ones.
