Simple Science, Big Learning: Try This Montessori-Inspired Experiment at Home

For young children, some of the best learning begins with a simple question: What will happen if I try this?

That natural curiosity is something we encourage every day at Apple Montessori Schools. Children learn by touching, exploring, experimenting, observing, and discovering — building an understanding of the world around them through hands-on experiences.

And that kind of learning doesn't have to stop when your child leaves the classroom.

With just a few items you probably already have at home, you can create a simple science experiment that feels like play while encouraging concentration, independence, fine motor development, and scientific thinking.

Try It at Home: Fizzy Eruption

This classic baking soda and vinegar experiment is especially exciting for young children because the results are immediate — and a little messy!

What You'll Need
  • A small cup or container
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • A tray or baking dish to contain the overflow
How to Present the Activity

Start by setting up the activity on a tray or in an area that's easy to clean. Place the cup in the center of the tray and invite your child to spoon some baking soda into it.

Add a few drops of food coloring, then slowly pour vinegar into the cup.

Now, observe!

The mixture will begin to bubble, fizz, and "erupt." Give your child plenty of time to watch what happens before inviting them to repeat the experiment independently.

And don't be surprised if they want to do it again...and again...and again!

There's More Learning Happening Than You Think

To a child, this activity may simply feel exciting. But behind all those bubbles, they're practicing a variety of important skills.

Concentration: Your child has to slow down, follow a sequence, and observe what happens.

Fine motor development: Scooping, pouring, and controlling small amounts of ingredients strengthen the hands and fingers.

Hand-eye coordination: Carefully transferring ingredients from one container to another requires precision and control.

Scientific observation: Children begin noticing cause and effect: I added this, and then that happened.

They're also getting an early introduction to chemistry. When baking soda and vinegar combine, they react to create carbon dioxide gas—the bubbles that produce the experiment's fizzy eruption.

For young children, there's no need for a lengthy science lesson. The experience itself is where much of the learning happens.

Give Your Child a Little More Control

Once your child understands the basic activity, look for ways to let them take the lead.

Instead of pouring the vinegar yourself, offer a small pitcher or eyedropper so your child can control how much is added. Let them experiment with different colors. Ask what they notice when they add a little vinegar versus a lot.

You don't need to direct every discovery or provide every answer. In fact, sometimes the best thing an adult can do is simply give a child the time and space to figure something out!

The Montessori Approach: Slow Down and Observe

There's a Montessori lesson for adults hidden in this activity, too: we don't always have to rush in.

When presenting an activity to your child, move slowly and use minimal words so they can focus on what you're doing. Once it's their turn, allow them time to observe and experiment before repeating the process.

Encourage your child to participate in each step they're capable of doing independently, from spooning the baking soda and pouring the vinegar to helping wipe up the tray when the experiment is finished.

The goal isn't a perfect volcano. It's the process.

That emphasis on hands-on discovery, purposeful movement, independence, and following a child's natural curiosity is at the heart of Montessori education.
