The Classroom Behind the Classroom: A Day of Growth at Apple Montessori

At Apple, learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends.

Behind every carefully prepared classroom, thoughtfully guided lesson, and meaningful student experience is something we call “The Classroom Behind the Classroom”—the intentional professional growth and collaboration that empowers our educators to continuously refine their craft.

Our recent Professional Development Day in early May brought Apple educators together from across our schools for a day of learning, reflection, and inspiration. Through engaging seminars and collaborative discussions, our teachers deepened their knowledge, explored innovative strategies, and strengthened the practices that help our students thrive every day.

Here’s a look at what was explored during this meaningful day of growth:

Mathematics in Montessori is hands-on, concrete, and deeply conceptual. During this seminar, educators explored how place value materials help children build a true understanding of quantity and number relationships—laying the foundation for confident mathematical thinking far beyond memorization.

The earliest years are full of extraordinary growth. This session focused on the purpose and intentional use of Montessori materials in our Infant and Toddler classrooms, reinforcing how these carefully selected tools support sensory exploration, independence, concentration, and early cognitive development.

Guidance is about teaching, not punishment. This seminar examined respectful, effective strategies that help children build self-regulation, problem-solving skills, and accountability while fostering emotional security and trust within the classroom community.

Learning extends far beyond four walls. Educators explored ways to maximize outdoor environments as rich spaces for discovery, movement, observation, and connection to nature—an essential extension of the Montessori experience.

Montessori education inspires curiosity about the world. This session focused on deepening children’s understanding of scientific inquiry and global awareness through engaging, interconnected lessons that encourage exploration and critical thinking.

Transitions are important moments in a child’s day. Teachers collaborated on strategies to create calm, predictable shifts between activities, helping children feel secure, focused, and ready to engage.

A strong school-home partnership is essential to a child’s success. This seminar focused on effective communication strategies that foster trust, transparency, and meaningful collaboration between educators and families.

This thought-provoking session explored what truly distinguishes authentic Montessori education from traditional childcare models. Educators reflected on the intentionality, philosophy, and practices that define the Apple experience and ensure our classrooms remain rooted in Montessori excellence.
