Is Public Pre-K Really Free? What Working Families Should Consider

The expansion of publicly funded pre-K has created new opportunities for families across our region. At first glance, a free preschool program may seem like the obvious financial choice. But when comparing preschool options and the cost to your family, tuition is only one part of the equation.

A program may be free to attend during the school day while still leaving families responsible for before-care, after-care, school closures, summer care, and transportation. There may also be less visible tradeoffs involving schedule flexibility, educational philosophy, continuity of care, and the overall experience a child receives.

Before making a decision, families should consider the full value and true cost of each option.

Public pre-K generally operates according to the local public-school schedule. Even a program described as "full day" may begin after many parents need to be at work and end several hours before the typical workday is over.

That can leave families searching—and paying—for:

• Before- and after-school care
• Transportation between programs
• Care during teacher in-service days and school closures
• Winter and spring break coverage

Then consider the educational experience, teacher consistency, family communication, curriculum, and flexibility each program provides.

The most affordable option on paper is not always the option that offers the greatest value—or the one that works best for your child and family.
