There’s something magical about watching a child discover how things grow.

During Garden Week at Apple Montessori Schools, we're celebrating how that magic comes to life—right in our outdoor classrooms. From planting seeds to watering gardens and observing changes day by day, children experience firsthand how nature teaches patience, responsibility, and wonder.

Learning Through Nature

At Apple Montessori, gardening is more than just an activity—it’s an extension of the Montessori classroom. As children dig, plant, and care for their gardens, they are naturally building important skills, such as:

  • Responsibility & Independence – Caring for plants gives children a sense of ownership and pride
  • Scientific Thinking – Observing growth, weather, and changes introduces early STEAM concepts
  • Fine Motor Skills – Scooping soil, planting seeds, and watering strengthen coordination
  • Patience & Focus – Watching a seed grow into a plant is a powerful lesson in time and care

It’s hands-on learning in its most natural form.

A Classroom That Extends Outdoors

Our outdoor environments are thoughtfully designed to feel like an extension of the indoor classroom—inviting children to explore, create, and connect with the world around them. You might see children:

  • Planting flowers, herbs, or vegetables
  • Watering and tending to garden beds
  • Exploring soil, insects, and natural textures
  • Talking about what plants need to grow
  • Celebrating their progress as sprouts begin to appear

These experiences support whole-child development, blending academics with curiosity, movement, and discovery.

From Garden to Table

In our programs, gardening lessons often connect to other meaningful experiences—like food tasting and nutrition exploration.

Children begin to understand where food comes from, building healthy habits and a deeper appreciation for what they eat. It’s not uncommon for a child to feel extra proud tasting something they helped grow themselves!

Planting the Seeds of Confidence

When a child sees that their care helped something grow, it reinforces a powerful message deeply rooted in the Montessori philosophy: “I can do this.” That sense of capability carries into the classroom, friendships, and beyond.

Looking Ahead to Summer

Garden Week is also a wonderful preview of the outdoor exploration that continues all summer long! At Apple, our summer camp program gives children even more opportunities to learn, create, and play outside—through hands-on activities, themed experiences, and plenty of time in nature.

Come See It in Action

There’s nothing quite like seeing the Montessori classroom—both indoors and out—for yourself.
