Beat Boredom with these Montessori Activities
Did you know that July is Anti-Boredom Month? In Montessori, we believe boredom doesn't have to be the enemy, but rather a spark of creativity or an idea waiting to happen. Check out these suggestions for beating boredom this summer with Montessori-inspired activities.
Set up a dedicated shelf or table with a few curated activities your child can choose from independently. These might include:
- Pouring and scooping with dry beans or rice
- Matching lids to containers
- Lacing cards or beads
- Puzzles or shape sorters
By rotating activities every week or two, you keep their interest fresh while allowing for repeated practice, which is key to Montessori learning.
Children love doing what adults do! Introduce simple, real-life tasks in age- and size-appropriate ways to help them feel capable and included:
- Washing fruits or veggies
- Sweeping with a child-sized broom
- Folding laundry
- Watering plants
- Preparing their own snack (e.g., slicing bananas with a kid-approved knife)
These tasks build fine motor skills, concentration, and independence, and are helpful!
Montessori emphasizes connection to the natural world. Try:
- A nature scavenger hunt
- Leaf or rock rubbing art
- Observing animals or insects and sketching them in a notebook
Even a walk around the block becomes a learning experience when you slow down and look closely!
Offer materials that invite imagination, not instructions, like:
- Clay or modeling dough
- Watercolor painting
- Building with natural blocks or magnetic tiles
- Fabric scraps for collage
There’s no “right” way to use these materials, which fosters confidence and creativity!
Sometimes, boredom is just a signal that a child is ready to explore something new—on their own terms. We hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity! And one more way to beat boredom? Join us for summer camp! The days are fun-filled and action-packed, and it's not too late to sign up.
